Systems Engineering Manager (Derby)

£55,000 - £65,000 per annum

Ford & Stanley – The Rail Recruitment Experts are working with one of our UK based rail clients who are the leading provider of software products for rail operations and signalling. We are looking for a Systems Engineering Manager who will lead a systems engineering team that comprises approximately 10 Systems Developers and Systems Engineers. You will plan, drive and coordinate critical development activities including requirements definition, architecture design, system requirements compliance and system change control. 


  • Responsible for defining systems engineering work needed on the programme throughout the lifecycle and working with planning and finance functions to develop coherent affordable systems engineering plan
  • Responsible for delivering systems engineering plan to the programme in line with cost, schedule and quality requirements
  • Provide leadership and technical direction for assigned program tasks and personnel
  • Lead systems development, requirements definition and requirements compliance processes
  • Provide Systems Lifecycle leadership across subsystem and system levels to ensure development, integration, verification, test and acceptance work in a coordinated manner
  • Responsible for delivery of contracted and systems engineering artefacts and reports to the programme and customer
  • Promote professional growth through timely performance feedback, coaching, and counselling
  • Support Change Manager and Project Manager in the development of impact assessments for change requests coming from Customer; this will include development of cost and schedule as well as technical impacts
  • Responsible for leading system change within the project Change Control Process and chairing Change Control Boards.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining system configuration baselines through formal deliveries
  • Responsible for working in adherence to the Company Business Management System (BMS) 

Qualifications & Experience    

  • Experience in engineering leadership or management within multi-site, multi-component software intensive, safety related, high availability programmes
  • Experience and solid understanding of implementing BS EN50128 and BS EN50126
  • Requirements Capture / Management across the systems engineering lifecycle
  • Systems Integration on complex parallel development programmes
  • Experience of Systems Test and Design, and UML/SysML
  • Knowledge of DOORS and its implementation for requirements management
  • Experience in System Configuration and Baseline Management and control
  • Experience of working on Software Development programmes
  • Substantial experience in a systems engineering leadership, project leadership or functional manager role with direct reports within an engineering environment
  • Effective team building and project management ability
  • Previous experience in development of Railway Signalling products & technology is desired
  • Chartered Engineer status is desired
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skill
  • Knowledge of railway standards
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university
