Rolling Stock Maintenance Technician

£24.00 per hour, flat contract rate

Ford & Stanley Interim – The Recruitment Experts are seeking 2x Maintenance Technician’s to join a world-renowned Rail Manufacturer, working across multiple locations.

The Opportunity

One of the UK’s most innovative Rail Rolling Stock companies requires 2x dual skilled Maintenance Technicians with experience working for a train operating company to provide electrical and mechanical refurbishment, commission and thereafter maintenance support, working across multiple Depot’s. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who enjoy a varied position and are happy to travel as and when required.

Contract duration: 5 months (until December 2020), potential to become a permanent employee at the end of the contract if desired. 

Shift pattern to be confirmed, you will be working Monday-Friday, most likely day/nights.

Key Role and Responsibilities

  • Carry out preventative maintenance programmes, including safety checks, inspections according to examination sheets, component changes and overhaul of various rolling stock parts - where trained assessed and deemed competent. Carry out any fault finding and remedial work in a safe manner. Ensure the unit is in a suitable clean condition prior to the unit entering service. Compile accurate examination sheets, modification records, and other relevant documentation - utilising appropriate IT systems or relevant paper-based documents
  • The role will deliver and improve upon design concepts, working both hands on and technically to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of rolling stock.

  • Business Compliance - Training, Competence, Safety, Quality, Environment, and representation / outputs for our customer / client base relating to commissioning and maintenance.
  • Ensure that the maintenance performance standards for rolling stock are maintained. Setting and monitoring standards and safe methods of work for maintenance, repairs and inspection of the fleet by either internal staff or external contractors
  • Monitoring recorded faults, investigating as necessary and taking action to reduce or prevent further occurrences.
  • Adopt a flexible approach to work practises and a ‘Competence based skills’ approach to work completion i.e. do what trained, assessed and deemed competent to do to provide full flexibility based upon competence and skills provided.
  • Refurbishment and modification of the rolling stock including the replacement and upgrading of components and systems.
  • Comply with all relevant safety rules, Work instructions, Safe Systems of Works and Supervisor, Team Leaders/Engineers instructions. Assist in the preparation of Safe Systems of Work, Rule Changes, and Risk Assessments. Undertake Safety Management checks as required.
  • Respond to in service breakdowns and also take part in a ‘first response situation’ should emergencies in service arise
  • Safely train Apprentices and other staff members on the full range of their duties as required/instructed.
  • Assist non-Engineering Group staff in duties carried out on rolling stock
  • Carry out component overhauls as instructed, when trained and deemed competent to do so.
  • Participate in integrated teams when performing electro-mechanical equipment changes on Rolling Stock, involving multi-skilling.
  • Carry out any installation or commissioning work on any new built projects at various locations

The Candidate

You will have rolling stock maintenance experience, ideally working for a mainline rail company (TOC’s) and be dual skilled (electrical and mechanical). You will have strong fault-finding skills and be comfortable working on your own when required. You will be happy to work to the required shift pattern and travel across multiple depots.


  • You must be prepared to travel across multiple locations- travel and overnight accommodation is covered by the client
  • Rolling stock commissioning and fault investigation experience is essential 
  • Hands-on rolling stock maintenance experience
  • Planned maintenance and fault-finding methods
  • Experience working in a depot environment
  • NVQ Level 3 minimum 


  • Knowledge and experience of lifting machines/equipment
  • Forklift truck licence
